A New Hobby and a New Beginning

Well, the Olympic Fest is well and truly over - I have to admit that I DID enjoy the Para-Olympics much more than the able bodied Olympics - I think there was much more Olympic Spirit in evidence with the Para's and for me that made it much more interesting to watch.

But anyway... a momentous thing has happened today.... my last baby has gone to University.  I am at home alone, trying to make sense of all the rubbish left in his bedroom that has been sorted into piles for 'bin' 'charity shop' 'keep' and 'recycling'.  I'll be honest it isn't totally clear which or what goes where... but I am sure I will figure it out.  Am I feeling sad..?. a bit... but it hasn't hit home yet, it will later when hubby and I are on our own..... that will be interesting.  Not that we haven't been on our own before, but it is different this time...now we can expect to be 'just us' for most of the time.  Oooooh er Missus!!!

The other thing, not really so momentous, is that I went on a book binding course.  Ta Da......

It was a one day beginners course and I made a notebook.  Now it might look like a fairly ordinary notebook that can be bought at WH Smith... but it's not.

For a start... the paper inside is made from cotton and is beautiful to write on. Can you see where I have sewn the pages together... that was done using wax covered linen thread.

The front marbled paper is hand made here in the UK.  There were a number of beautiful papers to choose from but I chose this one to go with the red buckrum binding on the spine.

The label on the front was printed by me using an old fashioned 'typeset' printing press.  It all adds up to a really nice thing that gave me huge satisfaction to make and I can't wait to go on the next course which is a two day one and is working with leather  the end product being a leather bound journal.  Yes, it is possible that this will turn out to be an expensive pastime.  But I am trying to be frugal and plan to use up a lot of 'waste' or scrap stuff that I have around the house for making Christmas gifts etc... leather in particular can be re-used from old coats or handbags... I hope this isn't going to give the bag away re Yule tide presents this year... well maybe it will but at least the recipients will know that it takes a day to make a notebook and two days to make a leather bound journal!  That's got to be nicer than a quick dash round the shops on December 24th!!
